 Renovations Justin, TX
Look for Mold

Look for Mold:

Mold can begin to grow just a day or two after water has taken hold of your business. If you see small signs of mold growth in an area where you suspect a leak, contact Atlas National Renovations ASAP to diagnose the problem.

Check Your Pipes

Check Your Pipes:

If it's safe to do so, check out the piping inside and outside your commercial property. You want to keep a keen eye out for oxidation and corrosion around pipe fixtures. While you're at it, check your water heater for rust too. Corrosion or rust is a telltale sign of a water leak.

Check for Rings

Check for Rings:

Dark spots on walls and ceilings usually indicate water damage. If you see rings around a stain, the damage is probably older. Several rings with different shades of color mean an intermittent issue, where the area has been soaked and dried several times.

Understand Your Property

Understand Your Property:

This is more of a suggestion than a sign. As the commercial property owner, you should know your building's pipe system. You should know what is old and new and what areas may be at risk for water damage. Keep an extra-close eye on areas that have a higher potential for leaks, especially during rainstorms.

Republican Justin Holland has represented District 33 in the Texas House for one term, and we recommend that voters send him back for another.

Holland, 34, had not previously earned our recommendation. We found his policy prescriptions glib and full of platitudes two years ago when we recommended his opponent in the 2016 primary and again in that year's general election.

But Holland has made use of his experience as a member of the Heath City Council. He authored several bills that ended up on the governor's desk to become law, something not every freshman legislator can say.

Holland also voted in favor of House Bill 21, a school finance measure that, had it not been weakened by the Senate, would have provided millions of dollars in additional funding for school districts across Texas.

Democrat Laura Gunn, 52, is not yet prepared to serve in the House. She's smart, passionate and has views on several big issues that this newspaper strongly shares. But specific ideas of how she'd use her vote in the Legislature to solve the long list of concerns she voiced were largely absent in both our conversation with her and the questionnaire she filled out for our Voter Guide.

We're hoping another term in the Legislature will allow Holland to gain effectiveness, and perhaps create space for a change of heart on issues where we believe he's voted in ways that set Texas back. We would hope, for instance, that if a bill as divisive as the bathroom bill is reintroduced in 2019, it will not earn his support.

Meanwhile, we urge Gunn to continue preparing for public service, perhaps on a local level, to gain confidence and experience to run again for a seat in the Legislature.

Hundreds of residents crowded into an unairconditioned gym last week to hear about Oncor’s proposal to build a high voltage transmission line that the state says is needed to maintain the grid’s integrity as growth ramps up in Denton and Wise counties.

Justin officials put the call to action on the city’s website, urging residents to oppose Oncor’s proposed routes, which they say could impact new homes, a town center in the works and a beloved city park with a veterans memorial.

Oncor delivers electricity from power plants through transmission and distribution power lines. It plans to build a transmission line from a switch near U.S. 287 and Texas 114 south of Rhome to one southeast of Interstate 35W and FM 1171 in Flower Mound. The steel towers carrying the lines will be 120 to 175 feet tall, with four arms on each side.

Mayor James Clark estimated that over 250 people came to the July 13 meeting, including people from Rhome and New Fairview, Argyle and Northlake.

“There is just so much movement of people coming in this direction,” he said. “There are so many homes coming not just in Justin but farther to the west. This power line is not for Justin, it’s out west of us.”

Flower Mound spokesperson Melissa Demmitt said the city has encouraged property owners to submit their comments about the route, and the Town Council has expressed concerns and has had discussions with regional and state leaders.

Argyle passed a resolution in December opposing transmission lines through its town and authorized the administrator to take “necessary action” to oppose routes through the town. The latest proposed routes do not include the town. Neighboring Northlake passed a resolution in January urging a southern route for the transmission line.

Oncor spokesperson Kerri Dunn said the high-voltage lines are needed because of the “incredible growth” in the area. Dunn said the project will benefit the homes and businesses along the proposed route.

“We are very committed to making sure that we are available to these communities,” she said.

Clark acknowledges that the project is necessary but but he said there are alternatives.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages the state’s power grid, deems the project as critical to maintain reliable transmission, according to Oncor.

The Public Utility Commission of Texas is taking comments until July 24 and will decide on a route in early December, Clark said.

Justin, once known for its rural atmosphere, is experiencing the explosive growth seen throughout North Texas. The city’s population of 6,000 is expected to double in five years, Clark said.

He said the proposed routes could also affect the development of Reata Ridge where mature trees grow along a creek.

Justin is developing a 36-acre town center project, which will be home to medical offices, shops and restaurants. Clark said he couldn’t comment on stores and restaurants are coming.

Plans are also in the works to build a new city hall in the town center. The city has invested $8 million in the development, which Clark said will change the face of the community.

Justin is not the only community with concerns about the project.

Clark, who moved from Pilot Point to Justin about 10 years ago said he came to the community initially because it is close to Dallas/Fort Worth Airport for his business travel.

But he stayed because of the small town charm.

“What kept me here is the citizens and the close-knit family feel.”

When Joey McGuire left the Baylor football staff to become head coach at Texas Tech, he hired several young members of the Bears' operation to make the transition easier.

Now he's doing it again.

McGuire is hiring Justin "Juice" Johnson to be the Red Raiders' assistant head coach, wide receivers coach and passing-game coordinator. Tech announced the hire Wednesday.

Johnson, who was an all-conference receiver during his playing days at the University of Houston, coached running backs at Houston (2019) and Baylor (2020-22). Before that, he was an offense quality control staffer at Houston (2012), a graduate assistant at Texas A&M (2013) and, in three seasons at Kansas, an offensive analyst (2016-17) and the receivers coach (2018).

"We’re excited to welcome Coach Johnson and his family to Texas Tech," McGuire said in Tech's announcement. "I’ve seen firsthand his ability to connect and inspire student-athletes to perform at their best, so he’ll be a tremendous addition to our staff. Our players will really enjoy the energy that he will bring each and every day to help push this program forward as we strive for a Big 12 championship."

The move comes only one day after Emmett Jones, McGuire's wide receivers coach and passing-game coordinator this season, left to join the Oklahoma staff.

Johnson was the position coach at Baylor for standout freshman Richard Reese, who rushed for 972 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, and for Abram Smith, who ran for a Big 12-leading 1,601 yards on the Bears' 12-win Sugar Bowl champion team of 2021.

Johnson played high-school football at Richardson Berkner. He spent time at running back, tight end and receiver from 2008-11 at Houston. As a senior in 2011, he caught 87 passes for 1,229 yards and 12 touchdowns, earning first-team all-Conference USA.

Two added to rolls

Tech coach Joey McGuire placed offensive lineman Dennis Wilburn and inside receiver Nehemiah Martinez on scholarship, announcing it Tuesday night in front of the team. Both joined the program as walk-ons.

Wilburn started all 13 games at center this season, helping the Red Raiders go 8-5 with a 42-25 victory against Mississippi in the Texas Bowl. Martinez, a regular in the receiver rotation, caught 32 passes for 394 yards and two touchdowns and returned seven kickoffs for an average of 18.6 yards.

The Tech spring semester started Wednesday.

The Tim Hortons Texas location will be led by an exclusive area development agreement with TH of Texas LLC, which is owned by CSM Group, a 50-year-old, family-owned business based in Houston, according to the news release.

The development agreement calls for multiple Houston locations, but did not say exactly how many stores are planned in the coming years. Each Houston restaurant will be approximately 1,600 square feet and will feature both a double lane drive-thru and dine-in seating.

Tim Hortons, named after one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players, opened in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It is known for its freshly brewed coffee, pastries, muffins, cookies, doughnuts and doughnut holes called "Timbits". Well, now they're also known as "Tim Biebs."

Justin Broomhall took a Sunday fishing trip to Lake Cherokee with his father and his son. Little did he know they would make the catch of a lifetime.

Tech workers now doubting decision to move

from California to Texas

The Longview, Texas resident hooked a massive alligator snapping turtle on Father's Day, the biggest he's ever seen. "My dad was like 'Holy smokes, look at the size of that!'" Broomhall said. "My three-year-old son started panicking. He thought it was a dinosaur and kept saying, 'Let it go. Let it go. Put it back!'"

Broomhall was using dough bait in hopes of reeling in a catfish, he said. However, "from [the turtle] being so old and going blind, he's using his smell to find bait," he said. "I guess he felt it, thinking it was some other dead fish and he ate it."

The enormous creature weighed in around 200 lbs and was likely between 100 to 150 years old, estimated Broomhall, who works at Whitaker Plumbing in Carthage, Texas. "I do a lot of lifting. I was a bodybuilder in high school and 200 lbs to me is pretty easy to pick up," he said. "I was struggling with it."

However, since the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department considers the the alligator snapping turtle a threatened species worthy of being protected by the state, Broomhall decided to release the turtle back into the water, unharmed.

"For how old he is and knowing it took him how many years to get that big, he has to live in lakes and rivers. He needs to be free," Broomhall said. "They are good to eat, but that's why they're endangered in Texas."

When Broomhall reached behind the turtle's head and grabbed his shell to hoist the turtle, he noticed the hook was still in its mouth.

"So I just slid off in the water with him and grabbed him by his back leg and grabbed him by his tail," Broomhall said, explaining how they were able to bring the beast in and remove the hook. "My dad pulled me back on land, and I pulled him up about halfway out of the water, and then we threw a rope around his head and flipped him over on his back."

The proud angler shared photos and video of his catch on Facebook and TikTok. However, some social media users didn't believe his shots were real.

"Seeing [the turtle] in person is totally different than seeing it in a picture or video," Broomhall admitted. "I mean photos and stuff like that don't make justice to how big his head was and how big his mouth and body was. My hand, from the tip of my pinky to the tip of my thumb measures nine inches, and it still wasn't big enough to cover his head."

Broomhall said it's a Father's Day he'll never forget. "Just being down there with my dad and my son and living on lakes and catching fish and hunting all of our lives, seeing something like that was pretty incredible," he said.
