Hollywood, Texas? Mansfield is ready to make it happen with new studio

Just south of the Tarrant County portion of the city, Mansfield is preparing to install a massive new addition in a move the mayor called a big step toward the community’s long-term goal of being an entertainment destination. And it’s coming in the form of the film and TV industry.
Angel Gracia says Mansfield, though at first glance an unlikely home for the epicenter of an expansion of the film industry into North Texas, is the perfect location for just that. The brains behind Super Studios Mansfield, Gracia is the director who has plans (and the go-ahead from city leadership) to construct a 72-acre “city in a city” on a piece of land that has been vacant for generations.
Super Studios Mansfield was green lit by the city council Feb. 27. The project, a micro studio with multi-use development attached, is expected by Gracia to be done in about two years, and city leaders are already predicting it could help spur the transformation of Mansfield from a sleepy neighborhood community to a tourist destination.
For Gracia, he hopes to see Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Paramount Plus and Peacock originals using the space, as well as smaller production films and series.
Sound stages, production offices, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, retail, hotels, apartments and even a trade school will all come together to form what Gracia calls “a film studio designed by filmmakers for filmmakers.”
“I don’t say that to be cute,” Gracia told the Star-Telegram. “Film crews always complain about things that we wish were different, so why not do it different ourselves?”
To do that, he said, he spoke to people who work in all different areas of film production. Going to the folks who work in camera, lights, electric, wardrobe, set, post-production and every other department he could think of, Gracia asked industry veterans to make a list of things they wish were different about film studios. And he got answers — from the way lighting is rigged to the placement of set workshops and ramps and doors.
For the city, Mayor Michael Evans said it could be a boon to the hopes of turning Mansfield into a household name for movie and streaming series fans.
“One of the things that we are attempting to build here in Mansfield is an innovative mindset,” Evans said. “We’ve been known for years as a place where we attracted industrial companies and the industrial industry, which is good. We learned, though, a few years ago that in order for you to be a vibrant city, in order for you to be a destination city, you’re going to have to diversify your portfolio.”
Evans said the city is done with attracting industrial developments. It’s now working on bringing the medical, biotechnology, dining and entertainment industry to Mansfield.
“That’s who we want to be,” Evans said.
He wants to see the city become an “innovation corridor.”
Jason Moore, the executive director of the Mansfield Economic Development Corporation, said the city has already heard from other businesses and developers like that who want be neighbors with Super Studios Mansfield. The city is currently looking to bring in a sports stadium, and both he and Evans said it wouldn’t be surprising to see more interest in coming years from others in the film industry.
“I think that Texas has been starving for the very industry that we’re bringing to Mansfield,” Evans said. “ ... Why not Texas have its own movie industry? There’s been a monopoly on the film industry for literally 100 plus years in California.”
Gracia said he was surprised to realize that nobody else had already started development of film studios in Mansfield. It’s in a perfect position, he said. Close to the airport, about 30 minutes from both downtown Fort Worth and Dallas, plenty of lakes, close proximity to diverse landscapes and other places that filmmakers can go when they need to shoot on-scene instead of in the sound stage.
“I pulled my hair out trying to figure out all the negatives because you have to do that and then tackle it,” Gracia said. “To be ready for the storm, for the generator to explode, for the actor to not be in the mood and just not show up.”
As far as location of the studios and the opportunity to make it his own, Gracia said he couldn’t find any problems. Tax incentives could be improved at the state level, but that’s something he expects to see change over time.
Evans said the industry will bring in about 2,000 jobs. Gracia can see that happening, too, especially with the trade school that will be built there.
“It’s something I wish I had when I started off,” Gracia said. “If you’re good with cameras, you should be shooting. If you’re good with designing for wardrobe, you should be in wardrobe. This will teach you how.”
A trade school education is all Gracia figures someone needs to get into the industry, assuming they have opportunities along the way to practice the skills they’re learning and build a reputation.
“I rarely hire someone because of where you graduate,” he said. “I call people you’ve worked with. I want to know your track record.”
By having the trade school on the same property as the studio, students will have opportunities to get work on productions there while getting their education. They’ll also have a pipeline right into the industry through the trade school and Super Studios Mansfield.
With the project’s completion being about two years out, Gracia said it may be a little while before Mansfield sees a migration of full-time film industry workers setting down roots in Mansfield, but it is inevitable. With the proliferation of streaming services, studio space is being booked solid across the nation. In states like Georgia, Louisiana and Nebraska, studios are booked well in advance.
If the studio is quickly successful, as he hopes it will be, he expects workers who specialize in the production phase of filming, like sound, camera and wardrobe specialists, to realize they can buy a home in Mansfield and have steady work through the studios.
As for Gracia, he’s not planning on developing the studios and then selling them off to someone else.
“The idea is to build it and run it, to make it a legacy project,” Gracia said. “Leave the world something.”

SURPRISE Ariz. — On Monday morning, the metal bleachers just beyond the chain-link fence behind home plate of the “TX 1” backfield at the shared Texas Rangers/Kansas City Royals complex in Surprise, Arizona, was the hottest … well, I actually don’t know if they make you buy tickets to watch minor-league spring training games.
In 2021, the Rangers lost more than 100 games 10 years after they last played in the World Series. The following offseason, the team committed half a billion dollars to a couple of star shortstops in a striking effort to force a new era. In 2022, they lost 94 games and finished even further back of the first-place Houston Astros. To oversimplify the issue: The Rangers’ rotation allowed more runs than 23 other MLB starting staffs.
Even before the season was over, the team fired its manager and head of baseball operations, elevating former pitcher Chris Young to that role. In the offseason, the Rangers fired two pitching coaches, replacing them with the guy who was their pitching coach when they made the World Series in consecutive years. They convinced a three-time champion manager to come out of retirement.
And they overhauled the rotation.
In a single month, the Rangers agreed to free-agent deals with: Andrew Heaney, a Dodgers reclamation project-turned-starter with the second-most strikeouts per nine innings last year (provided you set the inning cutoff low enough); Nathan Eovaldi, a member of the 2018 champion Red Sox rotation; and Jacob deGrom, the most tantalizingly talented pitcher in the sport.
Combined, those three pitched 246 innings last year, and all are in their 30s, so the health of the entire rotation will determine how far they go in making a difference in the Rangers’ fortunes. But deGrom, in particular, is like a singularly valuable, one-of-a-kind Fabergé egg — if a Fabergé egg could throw a four-seam fastball 99 mph with relative ease.
The Rangers offered deGrom $185 million to provide the team with an unparalleled ace for five seasons. They need him on the mound when the games matter, which in this case meant his not getting on the mound in a game setting for the first month of spring training.
When deGrom arrived at camp with tightness in his left side, the team decided to proceed with the utmost caution. He had debated whether he even needed to tell his new team, seeing as it’s the kind of ailment he would’ve pitched through at a different point in his career.
“And then I was like, ‘What's the smart thing here?’ We got plenty of time. We'll have plenty of time in spring,” deGrom said Monday. “I was trying to play it smart to be healthy.”
So the Rangers waited while he rested — until finally, last week he was able to face teammates in a live batting practice setting, and a few days later, he was ready to make his first start in a Rangers uniform.

The Rangers share a spring training facility with the Royals, and their minor-league players regularly face off on the backfields. For as much as major-league spring training games are more about preparation than competition, minor-league games are an even more controlled environment. Which is why an hour and a half before the bulk of the big-league squad took on the Arizona Diamondbacks, Eovaldi, coming back from his own brief reset for a similar side strain, faced the Royals’ Double-A team while deGrom faced their Triple-A team.
“Biggest game of the year,” said a Royals minor-leaguer who had come to watch.
“You know it,” his teammate replied.
DeGrom threw 24 pitches — 20 strikes — in two innings before decamping to the bullpen mounds. The second batter he faced hit an inside-the-park home run that elicited a grin from the two-time Cy Young award winner.
“Hats off to him,” deGrom said later.
He retired the next six batters in a row, five on strikeouts. After each one, you could hear the crowd collectively exhale in awe and appreciation. (You might think all major-league pitchers look equally nasty up close until you see Jacob deGrom going for the out from just beyond the foul line.)
“Oh, that’s disgusting,” someone said after an unfortunate Storm Chaser nearly spun himself into the ground swinging through a pitch.
After the outing, deGrom reported that he felt fine — great, even. He was particularly pleased to have thrown all four of his pitches and predicted that the changeup and curveball would be plus pitches for him this season.
To deGrom, it had been just like any other game.
“When somebody steps in there,” he said, “I want to get them out.”
For nine years in New York, deGrom was a vessel for Mets fans' hope. He was an All-Star in 2015, when the team went to the World Series but fell short. While he seemed to evolve from there into something superhuman, the team languished in increasingly absurd ineptitude.
When the Mets won 101 games last season with deGrom facing down free agency, it felt like the culmination was coming. He would deliver the city, one that embraced him almost desperately in spite of the fact that he never seemed quite at home there, an iconic victory, an instant classic that would cement his status as the greatest pitcher of his generation. Mets fans don’t need anyone to be reminded of what happened next.
And now he’s here, entering his age-35 season on a new team, still without a ring to his name. Maybe someday, Jacob deGrom will mean something different to Rangers fans, and the city will contain only happy memories for him. His greatness is so evident that it’s easy to want to get ahead of yourself. He looks like a sure thing, a magic bullet on the mound. But guarantees are always a mirage, and so Monday morning on the backfields of Arizona, the Rangers took a very careful first step.

Mayor Turner Celebrates Improvements to Forum Park as Part of City's 50/50 Park Partners Initiative

Located in District J, within the Alief-Westwood Complete Community, Forum Park is the third neighborhood park to complete its transformation as part of 50/50 Park Partners, an initiative created by Mayor Sylvester Turner to improve neighborhood parks with the support of the corporate community.
“Complete Communities is about championing the voices of the residents, as is 50/50 Park Partners. I am proud that the upgrades to Forum Park reflect the needs and desires of this Alief-Westwood community. Every neighborhood should have access to quality parks, and I thank our partners for helping to make this shared vision for Houston a reality,” said Mayor Turner.
A total of $1.4 million dollars was allocated for improvements made to Forum Park through 50/50 Park Partners including a new soccer mini-pitch court, a new half basketball court, upgraded park lighting, a new illuminated parking lot, a shade sail for the playground, new sidewalks, new picnic tables, benches, BBQ grills, water fountains, park signage and more. These exiting park features were funded by Memorial Hermann Community Benefit Corporation, Episcopal Health, Texas Children's Hospital and included the support of Houston Dynamo FC, Houston Dash and the U.S. Soccer Foundation.
The mini-pitch was donated by former Dynamo/Dash minority owner Ben Guill, former Dynamo/Dash minority owner Jake Silverstein through the W.J. Silverstein Family Trust, the Houston Dynamo FC and Houston Dash, and the U.S. Soccer Foundation. This mini-pitch is one of 15 that the partners are installing across the Greater Houston area by 2024.
The initiative, rooted in equitably investing in neighborhoods across Houston, includes listening sessions to determine park improvements in collaboration with local communities. All park improvements were selected based on input from each community addressing their desires for improvements to their local parks.
“It is important for neighborhood parks to serve the community’s needs, especially in a city as large and diverse as Houston. Our city is fortunate to have so many great park destinations and we hope all communities consider their neighborhood parks as great places to gather,” said Beth White, President and CEO of Houston Parks Board.
“Neighborhood parks like this one in the Alief-Westwood Complete Community are the backbone of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, said Kenneth Allen, Director, Houston Parks and Recreation Department.

The heart of 50/50 Park Partners is the creation of long-term relationships for sustained impact between businesses, communities, and parks, improving the quality of life for Houstonians for decades to come.
The project is supported by the City of Houston’s Resiliency Office and the Office of Complete Communities. The 50/50 Park Partners framework provides an opportunity for corporations to play a leadership role in supporting neighborhood parks and their surrounding communities, catalyzing the process of reinvigorating an under-resourced park.

Pan American intends to share samples from its planned exploration programs at the Horizon Lithium and Big Mack properties with IMI for testing.
