BEDFORD, Texas — No matter what customers order from the McDonald’s drive-thru in Bedford, Texas, every meal comes with a sweetie.

Employee Dawn Crager greets nearly every customer with “hey, sweetie,” before encouraging them to “have an awesome day!”

For 11 years, Crager has worked the drive-thru window at McDonald’s. Each interaction lasts only a few seconds, but she has found a way to connect.

“I’m the kind of person who asks a lot of questions,” Crager said. “And then I learn about their life and their family and it’s wonderful.”

To Crager, her customers are family.

“Three of them I can think of right now I’m really close to, and I do spend some holidays with them,” she said.

Customers love her so much, some drive out of their way, past other McDonald’s stores just to come to the Bedford location.

“I love Dawn,” said customer Lisa Moen. “There are other McDonald’s where you can get a sausage and biscuit, but you can’t get Dawn there.”

“She starts your day off right,” said another customer, Darlene Hollingsworth.

“She is a ray of sunshine,” customer Kim Thornton said. “She is just a blessing to a lot of us.”

It’s that positivity and a genuine love for the job that led one customer to show appreciation for Crager on Facebook.

A lot of people felt the same way and hundreds responded to that post singing Crager’s praises. Crager knew nothing about the kind messages on Facebook, until a couple days later when a surprise rolled up to her drive-thru window.

“I was like ‘wow,’” Crager said. “It was just, I couldn’t believe it.”

A couple weeks ago, throughout her shift, Crager was showered with cards, gifts and love. It was customers’ small way of repaying her kindness.

When given the chance to invest in others, we often make the excuse that we don’t have time, but Crager proves the impact of even just a few seconds can last forever.

“It’s just wonderful,” Crager said. “It’s a wonderful feeling. And like I said, I really love my job.”

Fans of The Cajun Market & Cafe have something to look forward to in the new year — the popular Colleyville Cajun restaurant will open two new locations in Bedford and The Colony on Jan. 2, 2023.

After two years, rising costs fueled by inflation and a nearly 30% downturn in business forced restaurant owner Phil Tullis and his wife, Deborah McDaniel, to call it quits in October.

For now.

Not quite knowing how long it would take to get their beloved restaurant up and running again, they took comfort in the appeal their food had with their loyal patrons.

“I’ve always looked at the business as what other people are saying about you, not what you’re saying about yourself and if you read these comments, there’s genuine love there,” Tullis said of customers after they closed the Coleyville location. “That’s what warms my heart and Debbie’s heart the most.”

Serving a variety of Cajun food — from crawfish and po’boys, to gumbo and chargrilled oysters — it did not take long for Tullis and McDaniel to get nibbles from potential partners.

In came brothers Dirk and Mark Kelcher of Kelcher Entertainment.

The brothers knew of The Cajun Market & Cafe’ reputation and loyal following. It was exactly what they’d been looking for. They had plenty to offer in their Bourbon Street Bar & Grill locations in Bedford and The Colony — mostly it is the space to expand.

After some thought, Tullis and McDaniel shared the good news with their multitude of fans on social media.

“We knew we had a very loyal, very loving following and the outpouring of support we got when we closed was off the charts,” Tullis said. “It just made us feel very, very special.”

The Bedford location offers Tullis and his crew the space they didn’t quite have at the Colleyville location, he said. The 9,000-square-foot venue includes two outdoor decks with roll-up doors, a stage for entertainment and a large bar.

Tullis plans to add a fully chilled oyster bar for patrons to casually enjoy fresh shellfish like if they were at a restaurant in New Orleans.

Tullis recommends the entire menu because it’s all authentic Cajun food straight from the bayous of Louisiana. Even the bread is New Orleans-style baguettes that are served along with the seafood.

There is gumbo, sandwiches, chargrilled oysters, fried seafood, pastas and crawfish, among many other things. There is even a roast beef po’boy with gravy that “takes you about 10 napkins to eat one, but they’re delicious and they’re sloppy,” Tullis said

The opening date was chosen to coincide with Louisiana State University’s football game against Purdue University at the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. That is hardcore Cajun.

Eventually, expect the new locations to have freezers full of Cajun food for patrons to buy. Chicken, sausage and seafood gumbo, along with boudin balls and tasso ham, will be available.

Going from one restaurant to two locations in a few months has been quite the ride, Tullis said.

The Cajun Market & Cafe opens at 11 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2023 in Bedford at 1833 Airport Freeway and The Colony at 2851 Plano Pkwy Suite 270.

Bedford fire badly damages 3 homes, displacing 13 people

BEDFORD, Texas - An early morning fire on in Bedford on Tuesday left 13 people without a place to stay.Flames broke out...

BEDFORD, Texas - An early morning fire on in Bedford on Tuesday left 13 people without a place to stay.

Flames broke out around 4 a.m. at a carport on Schumac Lane, it soon spread to four cars, powerlines, a shed and multiple homes including one on Donna Lane.

3 homes were damaged in the fire. 13 people were evacuated, and all escaped without harm.

Bill Fondaro bought barbecue to give to those who had their homes damaged.

"We walked down to see and these poor guys got kind of burnt out, so the wife decided to get them some Spring Creek Barbecue," said Fondaro.

The Bedford Fire Department shared photos of from the height of the battle against the flames in the early morning hours.

"Our initial crews got on scene and found multiple cars involved and a carport fully involved," said Bedford fire chief Bill Walker. "As the fire was progressing, the way these houses came together, we had three separate houses all suffer significant damage."

The multi-location two-alarm fire prompted support from several nearby fire departments including Hurst, Euless, Watauga and North Richland Hills.

"Because of how hot cars burn, the intensity of the fire just translated into those other structures. So we had three houses burning at different levels," said Walker.

Hours later, some who lived at the homes appeared to salvage what they could in bags.

Helpful neighbor Bob Fornaro says he imagines the trees in the area played a part in fanning the flames.

He's thankful it wasn't any worse.

"I think it got into the trees. You know we have a nice treed neighborhood that was a plus, but when the fire jumps onto trees and onto the fences then that’s kind of a negative," he said. "You think about how the whole situation, and how it could also affect you."

Chief Walker agrees it could've been much worse, emphasizing despite the destruction, more than a dozen people made it out safely.

"Ultimately a lot of fire, a lot of damage. A chaotic scene because it was breach on two different streets," he said.

The Red Cross has been called to help the families affected by the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

HURST, Texas — H-E-B wants an H-E-B.

It's only fair, right?

For the uninitiated, the three suburbs southwest of the DFW Airport are colloquially known as "H-E-B": Hurst, Euless, Bedford. Which doesn't make complete sense, given that Bedford comes after Hurst, if you're driving west to east along Texas 183.

But that's another issue. And, honestly, Hurst-Euless-Bedford has a better ring to it than another combination of the three.

We digress.

The real issue here goes back to the other H-E-B: The famed Texas grocery store that, after many years, has finally made an expansion into North Texas' largest counties.

At least six H-E-B stores are planned in Collin County; one in Tarrant County, one in Rockwall County and one in Kaufman County. H-E-B also owns land across the Metroplex -- including a plot in Euless! -- along with several store locations on the outskirts of DFW.

But nowhere are there any concrete plans for an H-E-B in the H-E-B, Hurst-Euless-Bedford. Not yet, anyway.

And an H-E-B resident has apparently taken notice of this.

Amanda San Miguel started an online petition on Change.org to Stephen Butts, the CEO of H-E-B the grocery store.

"Living in midcities, aka H-E-B area, the lack of an H-E-B store within reasonable distance is frustrating," San Miguel wrote. "Please consider expanding closer to central part of the DFW Metroplex."

So far, 121 people have signed the petition - hey, you have to start somewhere, right? - but it's hard not to be moved by a passionate plea for a Texas staple.
